Tonight a series of large earthquakes hit Niigata in Japan - here in Tokyo we could feel quite strong shudders and the fact that they kept on coming was the most worrying thing. I've lived in Japan for a few years now and I've learned to live with the odd rattle, but tonights felt different even without seeing the news. I come from a country where quakes simply DON'T happen - but even Japanese people have this whole 'freeze in your tracks and look at other people to measure how worried they look' idea. What the fuck can you do when the ground decides to get on down and do the tectonic truffle-shuffle???

To those of you who have never experienced an earthquake, it's one of the most helpless feelings in the world. There is absolutely nothing you can do other than just wait and see if it rides itself out or suddenly decides to start levelling things. For a long time after, everything feels like a quake - 'Did I just shift my weight, or is it another one?' , 'Was that creaking noise someone upstairs, or the frame of the house starting to wobble?' It truely sucks to the N-th degree.
